Acknowledging my movement style

Being judged by others is an element in my dancing career that I am afraid of and is still something I am apprehensive about whenever I show my choreography. I want every movement to be my best understandably, however, I know that I need to work on developing freedom in my movements and dancing for liberation, instead of perfecting every movement straight away.

Throughout my work, my own authentic voice emerges to ignite a spark within my choreography, however, I would love to find more authenticity within my movements and be open to exploring different connections with my chosen stimulus. In Kate Flatt's book, 'Choreography, Creating and Developing Dance for performance,' (chapter 2, page31),  she mentions that a great approach to choreography is thinking, 'let's see what happens if...' or alternatively, "'let's try this...',(Flatt, 2021). This week I have been thinking about this method which has worked tremendously. It has aided my choreography into having a genuine interpretation, as it has triggered potential in developing different textures of movement that I resist doing due to my self judgemental nature.

Creative improvisation:

I felt venerable when doing this creative improvisation, as my movements embodied my emotions with my stimulus in mind. I wasn't critically analysing my movements but instead enjoying the freedom of committing to different dynamics. Within this improvisation, there are moments of stillness, softness and then quick, chaotic impulses which I talk about achieving in my last blog.

Personally, I think planning is important as it sets direction and priorities. Assessing risks and opportunities is a factor that Twyla Tharp's, 'The Creative Habit' book talks about. She mentions that 'You never want the planning to inhibit the natural evolution of your work', (Tharp and Reiter, 2003). I agree with this statement, as you want the intention of your movements to move the audience through a credible performance.
(Flatt, 2021)

Accepting my creative process and movements is hard for me as I am always willing to develop and interpret new skills. I was overwhelmed by my creative improvisation task as when looking back, I can sense the raw emotion that I am feeling. It has inspired me to do an improvised section in my choreography as when watching Mats Ek documentary in class, he vocalized that, "spontaneous movements are more closely related to emotions than words," (The Choreographer Mats Ek, 2014).
